What is a Silicon Carbide Brick?

Silicon carbide brick is also called sic brick. It is an acidic refractory brick whose main components are tridymite, cristobalite, and a small amount of residual quartz and glass phases.

Generally, the silica content is more than 94%, and the true density is 2.35 g/cm3. It has high-temperature strength and excellent resistance to acid slag erosion. The load softening starting temperature is 1620–1670 °C. It will not deform even after long-term use in high-temperature environments. Thermal shock stability is relatively low (1 to 4 underwater heat exchanges).

Application of sic brick

The sic brick is used for the upper structure of the glass furnace molten pool (large loom, end wall, side wall, and partial parts of the regenerator). It is also suitable for metallurgical applications.

Generally speaking, there are obvious differences in performance and indicators between silica bricks used in the glass field and the metallurgical field.

Advantages of silicon carbide brick

When reacting with clinker during use, it forms a thin protective layer of calcium aluminate on the surface of the brick, so that the liquid is not easy to penetrate. Its anti-spalling performance is better than that of directly combined magnesia chromium bricks.

The manufacturing process of sic brick

Method One

Silicon carbide bricks generally contain more than 95% silicon, and there are different specifications of bricks according to different uses. Its production process is as follows:

Crushing → screening → mixing → wet rolling and forming → drying → firing → inspection → packaging

(1) Crushing: A jaw crusher crushes waste bricks and raw materials; a cone crushes them to the required particle size; and it removes dust.

(2) Screening: The bucket elevator is raised to the top for screening, the fine powder enters the mixer for mixing, and the coarse powder continues to enter the cone crusher for crushing.

(3) Mixing: Add paper pulp and other binding agents to mix the raw materials evenly to avoid excessive local components and defects.

(4) Wet rolling forming: It is divided into manual forming and mechanical forming. For simple shapes, mechanical forming is used for mass production. After the molding is completed, a semi-inspection is carried out, the unqualified silica bricks are re-molded, and the qualified bricks enter the drying workshop.

(5) Drying: The bricks are dried in a dryer at a high temperature for 1 hour and a low temperature for 1.5 hours.

(6) Sintering: The firing temperature in the tunnel kiln is about 1430°C, the fuel is gas, and the firing time is 7 days.

(7) Inspection: The finished product is inspected after it leaves the kiln. The inspection is divided into a physical inspection and a chemical inspection. Physical inspection includes inspection of the length, width, height, pores, and high-temperature creep of silica bricks; chemical inspection generally conducts detailed inspections on whether the components of the product meet the required content. After inspection, the qualified products are packaged, and the unqualified products are re-entered into the jaw crusher as raw materials for crushing and reuse.

(8) After inspecting the coke oven silica bricks as qualified, they are packaged, and the unqualified ones are returned to the crushing process for reuse.
