What is Fireclay Refractory Brick?

Fireclay refractory brick is the most used refractory brick in various applications, such as the glass industry, iron and steel industry, metallurgical industry, cement industry, etc. It is mainly composed of mullite (25% to 50%), glass phase (25% to 60%), and cristobalite and quartz (up to 30%). Fire clay bricks are acidulous refractory products that can resist the erosion of acidic slag and acidic gases but have slightly less resistance to alkaline substances. They have good thermal properties and are resistant to rapid cooling and heating.

The manufacturing process of fire clay bricks

The hard clay is usually used as the raw material and pre-calcinated, the clinker is then mixed with soft clay. It is shaped by a semi-dry method or a plastic method, and the clay brick products are sintered at a temperature of 1300 to 1400 C. SiO2 and Al2O3 will react with impurities during the sintering process to generate silicate cocrystallization, which has low melting point and surrounds mullite crystals.

You can also add a small amount of water glass, cement, and other binding agents to make unfired products and monolithic materials.

Fireclay refractory brick price

The price of the fireclay brick is quite low because the materials are simple to obtain, there are few requirements, and the production method is straightforward. It is extensively employed in the external components of high-temperature furnaces and in environments with generally favorable operating conditions.

Fireclay refractory properties

While the refractoriness of the fireclay series is quite close to that of the silica series between 1690 and 1730 °C, it is almost 200 °C lower under load. The explanation is that in addition to the high refractoriness of mullite crystal concentration, the fireclay series also contains roughly half of an amorphous glass phase with a low melting point.

Composition of fire clay brick

The main composition of the fire clay brick is kaolin (Al2O3·2SiO2·2H2O). About 6%~7% of impurities (oxides of potassium, sodium, calcium, titanium, and iron) are added.
