Tundish is a vital equipment in continuous steel casting lined with refractories. It is an intermediate vessel between the ladle and the steel mold. The function of the tundish mainly includes buffering, stabilizing, and separating molten steel. It has a direct effect on the process stability and casting quality. Tundish refractory is the main component of the tundish, which directly decides the performance of the tundish and the production cost.

Permanent lining

Steel fiber-reinforced high-aluminum self-flowing castables are generally used for the permanent layer which is in contact with the insulation layer. The castable can be constructed with vibration or self-flow and is easy to construct. It has the advantages of high strength, thermal shock resistance, and corrosion resistance. In the production environment of continuous casting, it can be used together with the working layer of the tundish to extend the service life of the tundish under the condition of continuous casting for a long time.

Insulation lining

This layer is located next to the tundish steel shell and is usually made of asbestos panels, insulating bricks, or lightweight castables.

Working lining

There are two main types of working layers in the tundish: coating materials and dry materials.

The coating material is mainly composed of sintered magnesia, high-purity magnesia or fused magnesia, binder, plasticizer, and fiber components. It has the advantages of good viscosity, high adhesion rate, and corrosion resistance.

         The main raw materials of dry materials are sintered magnesia, high-purity magnesia, and fused magnesia, with phenolic resin (dry powder) and inorganic salts as binding agents.

Stabilizer and impact pad

The main raw materials for making stabilizer and impact pads include sintered magnesia, fused magnesite, special high-alumina bauxite, synthetic magnesia-aluminum spinel, synthetic magnesia-chromium sand, etc., with SiO2 and Al2O3 ultrafine powder as the binding agent. These materials have strong resistance to erosion and slag erosion. The impact pad can improve the flow field distribution of molten steel in the tundish, thereby improving the quality of the cast slab.

The main raw materials include sintered magnesia, fused magnesite, special high-alumina bauxite, synthetic magnesia-aluminum spinel, synthetic magnesia-chromium sand, etc., with SiO2 and Al2O3 ultrafine powder as the binding agent. By using fine materials, strong resistance to erosion is achieved.

Tundish Refractory for flow control & teeming system

The stopper rod,  SN plate (slider plate), and tundish upper nozzle play the role of controlling the flow rate of liquid steel in the tundish to get uniformly solidified molten steel stably.

A ladle shroud is used for feeding molten steel from a ladle to a tundish.

A submerged entry nozzle helps to control molten steel flow into the mold at a uniform speed.

It can dredge molten steel, and prevent molten steel from secondary oxidation at the same time.

Requirements of tundish refractory

  2. Good corrosion resistance: molten steel contains a large amount of iron oxide, calcium oxide, and other impurities, which will have a strong corrosive effect on refractory materials.
